Harmonica Players...I Need Your Experience & Advice, Please?
I am a serious harmonica player who always felt that Hohner made the best Diatonic Harmonica's around. But recently, I have bought some Special 20's and Golden Melodies and around the 4th and 5th holes I have been plagued with sticky reeds, broken reeds and reeds that totally tweaked out. It's not that I overuse or abuse these areas, they just seem to be flawed..period. I had purchased these 3 and 4 weeks ago and they endured no outrageous play or rookie handling. But yet and still they have become broken and weak and are (for the most part) unplayable. These weren't high end harps but they didn't fall out of Cracker Jack boxes either, they cost decent amount and to fallen apart like this is just not in alignment with Hohner's huge rep. As stated before, I am a serious musician and I need reliable equipment and Hohner's falling short. Maybe I should try Lee Oskar, I'll pay a bit more for quality and reliability if that's best. Any advice from musicians with this knowledge welcomed!
You really need not worry, when you buy a Hohner. Yes, they are the best available. I have been playing Hohner for..ummm...more than 45 years and have never found fault.
It is entirely possible though, that you have purchased a Hohner Harmonica that is made in China. Yes, even Hohner have started manufacturing activities in China and as You Can expect, the quality of the reeds is not the usual Hohner quality. But then, these Harmonicas are real cheap (like use and throw). Even then, I would not like to think that this would really be the case, since Hohner is a very careful manufacturer and would not take such a risk.
It is quite possible that there is a manufacturing defect. I would suggest you take the Harmonica to the shop from where you purchased it and try to get a replacement. If it really is a manufacturing defect, you should be able to get a replacement...hopefully. Alternately, you could get a set of replacement reed plates, so you won't have to buy the whole Harmonica again. That should save you good money and Make Your Harmonica like new and playable again.
