what is the best kind of Alto Saxophone mouthpiece: Hard Rubber or metal?
i'm looking into buying a new mouthpiece for my saxophone. i currently have a plastic yamaha mouthpiece but i dont know if the material the mouthpiece is made of has an effect on how good the sax would sound. it's because i play exactly the same way as other people do but the sound just doesn't come out the same. a little help would be good. i'm just asking about the mouthpiece since i know it's the most important part of the sax next to the player. ^^
Adjusting the horn in minor ways can make alot of diffrence in how it plays.
The metals the Sax is made of, they type of Mouth Piece, the reeds you use, the materials that the pads and the pad plates etc will all adjust the sound of the horn.
A metal mouth piece (i'm assuming just standard steel instead of silver or nickle-chrome) will make the Sax more...metallic or ringing. With an Alto thats not always a good thing. It can brighten up the sound, but to much and you end up sounding like a robot.
Usually for my Altos i tend to use plastic mouth pieces and use nickle-crome pad plates to give the sax a more "warm" feel to it and if i want to go more "jazzy" i just tend to compensate for it with a thicker count reed (4 or 5) and play style.
My Tenor on the other had is made of nickle-Crome and i use a metal mouth piece and silver pad plates to give it a brighter sound as its my primary Jazz horn. If i want to play a darker melody i can usually adjust with a mouth piece change and tuning
